Masculinity Defined: The Intersection of Hardiness and Sensitivity
Masculinity Reconsidered: A Balancing Act Between Strength and Sensitivity
The concept of masculinity these days receives a very narrow spectrum through stereotypes like being aggressive, dominating, and unemotional. There exist elements like strength, sensitivity, and compassion that would define the masculinity in man.
The Myth of the Stoic Hero
The classic picture of masculinity is a lonely figure, an emotionally cut-off but physically powerful man. The stereotypes are abundant but very much out of touch with reality. Real men are complex human beings who can feel and therefore experience all the different things that one can feel: happy, loving, angry, or grieving.
A new definition of masculinity.
Definition of a manly person should be one who values strength and sensitivity. A man at his best who is:
Has physical power: The facilities relate to actual power and mental strength.
He embraces emotional intelligence; that is, he understands his feelings and manages to keep himself, as well as empathize with other people.
He shows compassion and kindness to people, especially when he is in situations that might challenge him.
He values vulnerability: He fears not being vulnerable for that, goes to the point of showing himself naked.
The Power of Quiet Strength.
Some of the most influential people are those who quietly do business, exuding confidence in silence rather than with big talk. They are nice giants, gentle as silk but tough as the elephant. They know that there can be no strength if this is not accompanied by composure and resilience.
A Call to Young Men
Time to challenge the outdated notion of masculinity and welcome a more valid, satisfying definition. Young men should be encouraged to:
They have the freedom to express their feelings and emotions, including crying and seeking help when they are hurt.
Practice empathy: Try to put yourself in other people's shoes and try to understand them.
Cultivate your benevolence: Inner goodness is made recognizable through minute acts of benificence.
Vulnerability: Expression of emotions could improve your close relationships.
It would create a society free of judgment and mockery of men for being what they truly are. We are far, far behind in freeing ourselves from these stereotypes and embracing a different vision of manhood that might seem more wholesome and humane to the eye.
