Yo, Let's Get Real About Bias

So like everyone's got their little spin on things, you know? It's sort of like our brain's default setting. No harm in that, but can screw with our thinking if we don't watch ourselves.

First step to good decisions:

admit you are biased. Don't try to play super-objective robot because let's face it we are all human.

For example, if you love a certain band, you probably think that their new album is the best thing to ever be released, though it is kinda meh. That's your bias at work.

Once you have acknowledged your bias, the next thing to do is to listen to the other side. Yeah, I know it sounds boring, but trust me, it is actually super helpful. Suppose you are totally against homework. Instead of complaining about homework, try listening to a person who likes homework. Maybe they will say something about how homework helps them learn or prepare for tests.

You will be amazed at what you discover. Maybe you will come to a realization that there is a truth in what they're saying. Or maybe you'll just feel more secure in your own opinion. In any case, you'll be a better decision-maker.

After you hear the other person, it's your turn to scrutinize some facts. And don't rely on something that pops into your mind as what is true or not; look at things in life. For example, say you're having a heated debate about whether you want a pet; don't just think they're adorable. Think of the hours and dollars invested in care.

That's how you get to better decisions by acknowledging your bias, listening to others, and checking the facts. It's like leveling up your brain

 power!
